Remember that time when we were all obsessed with our straighteners? Well unfortunately that’s over.
Now it’s all about the new wave, a little straight, a little curly, and a lot wavy. We spotted it on our favourite Sydney-girl-goes-Hollywood Rose Byrne at a premiere in Los Angeles recently.
Those gentle waves look natural and effortless, don’t they? Well, they are – mostly. Here are our top tips to get the look at home:
- Start with a curl enhancing shampoo and conditioner like KMS Curl Up Shampoo and Conditioner, $28.95 each, from salons, which moisturise and strengthen hair. Towel dry gently, squeezing the water out of the hair, rather than rubbing.
- While hair is still wet, apply a ball of mousse like Kérastase Mousse Bouffante, $40, from salons, through the length of your hair but skipping the roots.
- Hair stylist Anthony Nader swears by his diffuser for curly hair. Instead of a blast of hot air, the hairdryer attachment spreads the heat out to avoid frizz. Gently scrunch the hair and allow it to sit in the pan of the diffuser of a few seconds.
- Once hair is almost dry, section it into 3 cm strips, rolling each around your finger then pinning it to your head with a bobby pin. Dry gently with a hair dryer on a low heat.
- Unwind dry hair gently and loosen curls by tousling with your fingers. Finally spray with a sea salt spray like Redken Fashion Waves 07 Texturising Sea Spray, $29.95, from salons, to hold the hair, shake and you’re good to go.
- Hairdresser Kevin Murphy has also created nifty wave clips for exactly this look. They are neatly snapped into the hair around the head before drying gently. Hair will have a gentle wave after they are unclipped. Try: Kevin Murphy Wave.Clip, $4 each, from salons.
